How is a tension headache different from a migraine?
Tension headaches are usually on both sides, pressing rather than throbbing, moderate, without nausea or light sensitivity. Migraines are more often one-sided, throbbing, worse with exertion, and come with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound.
When does a headache need urgent attention?
A sudden, worst-ever headache means immediate care. Headache with fever and a stiff neck, after a head injury, with neurological symptoms, or clearly unlike your usual pattern needs a professional promptly. A repeating afternoon pattern after screen work usually does not fall in that group.
Can painkillers make it worse?
Taken often, yes. Using pain medication on most days of the month can produce medication-overuse headache, which looks like the original problem getting worse. If you are reaching for them more than a couple of times a week, that alone is worth a conversation with your doctor.
